A drink in the pub is fine. But you live in one of the most beautiful corners of the country, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early if the spark isn't there. Here are twelve ideas from around the county.
Out in the open
1. Walk the causeway to St Michael's Mount
At low tide you can walk across from Marazion to the Mount on the old cobbled causeway. It's short, it's spectacular, and you'll need to check the tide times together...a good early test of teamwork.
2. Cycle a stretch of the Camel Trail
The trail follows the old railway line along the Camel estuary between Padstow and Wadebridge, and it's flat, traffic-free and easy. Hire bikes, pedal at chatting pace, and stop for something to eat at the end.
3. Climb Rough Tor
Rough Tor on Bodmin Moor is Cornwall's second-highest point and a much gentler climb than it looks. Big skies, wild ponies and granite tors...and no one can hear you puffing.
4. Pick a stretch of the South West Coast Path
The coast path runs right round Cornwall, so there's a stretch near everyone. Choose a short, well-trodden section between two villages so you can finish with a coffee rather than a map-reading argument.
5. Kynance Cove on a quiet day
Turquoise water, serpentine rock and one of Cornwall's most photographed beaches. Go early or out of season, and take the walk down slowly.
Gardens, culture and a bit of shelter
6. The gardens at Trelissick
Just outside Truro on the River Fal, Trelissick's gardens and woodland walks are perfect for a relaxed stroll with plenty of benches for a proper chat.
7. The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Near Mevagissey, Heligan's jungle valley and rope bridge give you something to talk about straight away, and there's a tea room when you've walked enough.
8. The Eden Project
If the weather turns (it will), Eden's biomes near St Austell are warm, dry and full of conversation starters. Good for anyone who likes plants, or who just likes the tropics without the flight.
9. A gallery in St Ives
Tate St Ives and the town's smaller galleries make an easy hour or two. You'll quickly find out whether you like the same things...and it's fine if you don't.
10. A show at the Minack Theatre
The open-air theatre carved into the cliffs at Porthcurno is unforgettable on a summer evening. Book ahead, bring a cushion and a blanket, and hope the weather behaves.
Keep it simple
11. A swim at the Jubilee Pool
Penzance's art-deco seawater lido is a lovely spot for a morning swim and a hot drink afterwards. Bold for a first date, but memorable.
12. A pasty on the harbour wall
Cheap, local and surprisingly romantic. Pick any harbour...Padstow, Mevagissey, Newlyn, St Ives...and watch the boats. Just keep an eye on the gulls.
A few tips before you go
- Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
- Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
- Check tide times, weather and opening times before you set off.
- Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
